About this tool
Icons, logos, interface screenshots and illustrations are usually stored as PNG, and on a website they often make up a surprising share of the download. Lossless WebP stores exactly the same pixels, alpha channel included, in files that Google reports as about 26% smaller than PNG.
That is why this page starts at quality 100, which switches the encoder to lossless mode. For photographs saved as PNG you can lower the quality to 80–90 and get much smaller lossy WebP files that still keep their transparency. Every file is encoded by libwebp inside your browser, so unreleased designs and internal screenshots stay on your computer.
-
Lossless at 100
Quality 100 produces lossless WebP: decode it and you get the pixels of the PNG back exactly.
-
Transparency kept
Soft shadows and anti-aliased edges keep their alpha values in both lossless and lossy WebP.
-
Lossy when it makes sense
For photos stored as PNG, quality 80–90 shrinks the files dramatically while staying visually clean.
-
Mock-ups stay local
Designs and screenshots are processed in the browser tab and never leave your device.
Questions and answers
Is PNG to WebP conversion lossless?
At quality 100, yes: the encoder uses the lossless mode of WebP and every pixel, transparency included, is preserved. Below 100 the lossy mode is used, which is smaller but no longer exact.
When is lossy WebP the better choice for a PNG?
When the PNG is really a photograph or a detailed illustration. Lossy WebP at 80–90 can be many times smaller and still supports transparency.
Can WordPress and site builders use WebP?
Yes. WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8, and most site builders and content delivery networks serve WebP directly.
Why is my lossless WebP barely smaller than the PNG?
Graphics that PNG already compresses very well, such as flat icons with few colours, leave little room. The gain is largest for screenshots and complex illustrations.
