About this tool
Need to fix a typo in a contract, reuse a report or quote a paper? Choose a PDF and get a Word document you can edit. By default the conversion runs on your device: Hushdesk reads the text layer in an isolated frame of this tab, rebuilds paragraphs, headings, lists and multi-column pages in the right reading order, and uploads nothing.
When the look matters more than the words (tables, pictures, the exact page layout), switch to Keep layout. That mode converts the file with pdf2docx on our server (France), and the upload is scheduled for deletion right after conversion. Scanned PDFs have no text layer: recognize the text first.
-
Reading order that makes sense
Two- and three-column articles, papers and newsletters are read column by column, not across the whole page. Words hyphenated at a line end are joined again.
-
Headings, lists and styles
Larger lines become Word headings for the navigation pane, bullet lists stay lists, and bold, italics, font sizes and alignment are carried over.
-
Nothing leaves your device
In Editable text mode an on-device engine reads the file in a frame whose network access is blocked by your browser. You can watch the network panel yourself.
-
Keep layout when it matters
Tables, pictures and page geometry are rebuilt on our server by pdf2docx, an open-source engine. You confirm the upload first, and the file is scheduled for deletion afterwards.
-
An honest result report
After the conversion you see what was converted and what to check: pages with tables, images or scans are listed by number, without made-up quality scores.
Editable text or Keep layout: which mode to choose
- Editable text (the default) suits letters, reports, articles, theses and books: text you want to rewrite, quote or translate. It is fast, private and handles multi-column pages well.
- Keep layout suits forms, invoices, brochures and documents full of tables, where the page has to look like the original.
- Neither mode can read words from a scan: recognize the text first, then convert.
Questions and answers
How do I convert a PDF to Word without losing formatting?
Use Keep layout. It rebuilds tables, images, columns and page geometry as a Word layout. Editable text mode keeps fonts, sizes, bold, italics, headings and lists but lets the text flow freely, which is usually easier to edit. If one mode does not suit your file, switch modes and convert again.
Is my PDF uploaded when I convert it to Word?
Not in Editable text mode: the conversion runs on your device and nothing is sent anywhere. Keep layout uploads the file to our server (France) only after you confirm; the upload is scheduled for deletion right after conversion, and the Word file 60 minutes later or when you delete it. See Privacy and security. Technical failures may delay deletion.
Can I turn a scanned PDF into an editable Word file?
A scan is a picture of text, so there is nothing to convert yet. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert the recognized PDF to Word. The result report tells you which pages are scans.
What happens to tables and images in the Word file?
In Editable text mode table cells become ordinary lines of text and images are left out; the result lists the affected pages. Keep layout turns tables into real Word tables and keeps the images.
Does PDF to Word work with Cyrillic and other alphabets?
Yes. Any text the PDF stores as Unicode converts: Cyrillic, Greek, accented Latin and more. Right-to-left paragraphs are marked as such. Some PDFs embed fonts without a character map; their text comes out as odd symbols, and OCR helps there.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to Word?
Yes, in Editable text mode: enter the password when asked. It is checked on your device and never sent anywhere. The Word file itself is not password-protected.
How large can the PDF for Word conversion be?
On a computer, Editable text mode handles files up to 200 MB and 2,000 pages; phones have lower limits. Keep layout accepts up to 50 MB and 100 pages per file.
