About this tool
AVIF is the newest image format on the web. Built on the AV1 video codec of the Alliance for Open Media and standardised in 2019, it squeezes photos into remarkably small files, so more and more sites serve it. The catch shows up when you save such a picture: older Windows photo viewers, many editors, office suites and upload forms do not recognise .avif at all.
Converting AVIF to JPG solves that. Hushdesk decodes the AVIF with libavif and writes a JPG at quality 90 in your browser, without uploading anything. Images with more than 8 bits per channel are reduced to the standard 8 bits that JPG stores, which is also what ordinary screens display.
-
Compatibility first
JPG opens in every photo viewer, editor, messenger and web form, including those that have never heard of AVIF.
-
Accurate decoding
AVIF files are decoded by libavif, the reference library, compiled to WebAssembly.
-
Transparency with a background
AVIF can be transparent; in the JPG those areas get white or any background colour you choose.
-
Nothing leaves the tab
Decoding and encoding happen locally, so private pictures are never uploaded.
Questions and answers
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format: a picture compressed with the AV1 video codec and stored in a HEIF-style container. It is very efficient, which is why websites and image services adopt it.
Why can’t I open AVIF files on my computer?
Support arrived late. Older Windows versions need an extra codec, and many editors and office programs still reject .avif. A JPG copy avoids the problem entirely.
Is the JPG bigger than the AVIF file?
Usually, often two or three times: AVIF compresses much better than JPG. That is expected and is the price of compatibility.
Can I convert many AVIF images to JPG at once?
Yes: select up to 50 files on a computer or 20 on a phone and download the results as a ZIP.
