About this tool
Some upload forms, print templates and editing workflows accept only PNG. Others simply work better with it: every time a JPG is edited and saved again it loses a little more detail, while a PNG can be saved as often as you like without further loss. Converting JPG to PNG gives you exactly that kind of working copy.
Hushdesk decodes the JPG, turns it upright if the camera stored it sideways, and writes a PNG on your device. Two honest caveats: the PNG will be several times larger than the JPG, and it cannot restore detail that JPG compression already removed. A transparent background is not created automatically either; that is a job for a background-removal tool.
-
No further quality loss
PNG is lossless, so you can edit and re-save the copy without stacking new compression artefacts.
-
Straightened automatically
Photos that a phone stored sideways are rotated from their EXIF orientation before the PNG is written.
-
Colour profile kept
Wide-gamut photos keep their embedded profile, so colours look the same in the PNG as in the original.
-
Metadata removed by default
Camera model, capture date and GPS location are left out unless you enable Keep metadata.
Questions and answers
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of what the JPG shows, compression artefacts included. What it adds is protection: further edits and saves no longer degrade the image.
Why is my PNG five times bigger than the JPG?
JPG throws away detail the eye barely notices, while PNG keeps every pixel. For a photo that means a much larger file, which is expected.
Will JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
No. A JPG carries no transparency information, so the PNG is fully opaque. Removing a background needs a separate tool that detects the subject.
Is JPEG the same as JPG?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are two extensions for the same format; both are accepted here, and so are .jpe and .jfif files.
