How it works

  1. 01 Choose a .docx file, or up to ten of them.
  2. 02 Keep Markdown selected and decide where pictures should go.
  3. 03 Press Convert.
  4. 04 Download the .md file, or a ZIP with the text and its images folder.

About this tool

Documentation that starts life in Word rarely stays there. When a specification moves into a Git repository, a handbook into MkDocs or Docusaurus, or meeting minutes into Obsidian, you need Markdown, not a .docx. Hushdesk reads the Word structure rather than its looks: heading styles become # headings, numbered and bulleted lists keep their nesting, simple tables turn into GitHub pipe tables, and bold, italics, links and footnotes carry over. Pictures are extracted into an images folder and linked from the text, so you get one ZIP ready to commit. Plain Markdown is also the most compact way to hand a long document to an AI assistant.

  • Structure over formatting

Only meaning is kept: headings, emphasis, lists, quotes, code and links. Fonts, colours and Word’s hidden formatting are dropped, so the Markdown stays readable.

  • Tables as GFM

Regular tables become pipe tables with a header row. Tables that Markdown cannot express, for example with lists inside cells, are kept as HTML.

  • Pictures that travel

Choose an images folder with relative links, embedded data URLs for a single self-contained file, or text only.

  • Round-trip friendly

Files made by our Markdown to DOCX converter come back with their code blocks, inline code and quotes intact.

Questions and answers

Which Markdown flavour does the DOCX converter produce?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown: ATX headings (#), fenced code blocks, dash bullets, pipe tables and ~~strikethrough~~. It renders on GitHub and GitLab and in Obsidian, MkDocs, Hugo and most other tools.

Where do the pictures from my Word file end up?

By default in a folder called images inside a ZIP, next to the Markdown file, which links to them with relative paths. You can instead embed them in the text as data URLs or leave them out.

What is lost when converting Word to Markdown?

Anything Markdown has no syntax for: fonts, colours, text boxes, page headers and footers, comments and equations. Merged table cells cannot be expressed in a pipe table, so such tables are simplified or kept as HTML.

Can I convert an old .doc file?

Not directly: only the modern .docx format is read. Open the file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first, then convert that copy.

Is my Word document sent anywhere for conversion?

No. The DOCX is unpacked and converted inside an isolated frame of this tab that has no network access, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
