About this tool
Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and page speed affects both visitors and search rankings. WebP delivers the visual quality of JPG in files that Google measured as 25–34% smaller, and every current browser displays it, Safari included since version 14.
This converter re-encodes your JPG photos as WebP right in the browser with libwebp, the reference encoder. The preset quality of 80 suits product photos and blog images; raise it for portfolios and lower it for thumbnails. Keep your original JPGs as masters: converting an already compressed photo is fine for publishing, but the source files are the ones to edit and archive.
-
Lighter pages
Smaller images load faster on mobile connections and help Core Web Vitals such as Largest Contentful Paint.
-
The reference encoder
Files are produced by libwebp, the official WebP library, compiled to WebAssembly.
-
Upright and clean
EXIF rotation is applied and camera data, GPS included, is stripped, so nothing private ends up on your site.
-
Works in bulk
Convert a whole product gallery of up to 50 photos in one go.
Questions and answers
How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
Typically a quarter to a third at similar visual quality, according to Google’s comparison. The gain depends on the photo: detailed textures save less, smooth gradients more.
Do all browsers show WebP images?
All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (14 or newer) do. Very old browsers need a JPG fallback, for example through the picture element in HTML.
Which WebP quality is best for a website?
75–85 covers most product and article photos. Hero images and portfolios look better at 85–90, and small thumbnails can go down to 60–70.
Can I turn WebP back into JPG later?
Yes, with WebP to JPG. Every lossy conversion costs a little quality, though, so keep your original JPGs instead of converting back and forth.
