About this tool
Right-click an image on a modern website and you often end up with a .webp file. Google introduced WebP in 2010 to make pages lighter, and browsers love it, but older photo viewers, some versions of Microsoft Office, print shops and plenty of upload forms still expect JPG. This page converts WebP to JPG in seconds, directly in your browser, so the pictures you saved never pass through somebody else’s server.
Choose the WebP files, keep the default quality of 90 or lower it for smaller files, and download the JPGs one by one or in a ZIP. If a WebP has transparent parts, they are filled with white or any colour you pick.
-
Opens anywhere
JPG is readable by practically every device, editor and website built in the last thirty years.
-
Transparency handled
WebP can be transparent, JPG cannot. Instead of an unexpected black background you get white, or the colour you choose.
-
Quality you control
Use 90 for photos that look the same as the original, and 75–80 when a small file matters more.
-
Saved images stay yours
Pictures from social networks or online shops are converted inside the browser tab and are never uploaded.
Why websites serve WebP
WebP stores photos 25–34% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, according to Google’s own measurements, and it supports transparency. That is why content delivery networks and site builders switch to it automatically. It is a great format for delivering pages and a poor one for editing and sharing, where JPG remains the common denominator.
Questions and answers
Why does my browser save pictures as WebP?
The website sends the WebP version to save bandwidth, and the browser simply stores what it received. Converting it to JPG gives you a file that older programs understand.
Will the JPG look worse than the WebP?
At quality 90 you will not see a difference. The JPG may even be larger than the WebP, because JPG compresses less efficiently; that is the price of compatibility.
Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?
Not here. Animated WebP files are declined with a clear message, because a JPG holds a single frame. Take a screenshot of the frame you need, or keep the animation as WebP.
What if the WebP has a transparent background?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour from More options. White is the default; pick any colour that matches the page where the image will appear.
How many WebP files can I convert at once?
Up to 50 on a computer and 20 on a phone in each batch. The results can be downloaded together as a ZIP archive.
