Limits on your device depend on its memory. Larger files may still work; the tool warns you first.

How it works

  1. 01 Choose or drop a PDF file.
  2. 02 Pick a target size, or type your own.
  3. 03 Check the estimate: expected size, quality and image resolution.
  4. 04 Press Compress PDF and download the smaller file.

About this tool

Choose a target and review the size estimate. Some files cannot reach the target at a usable quality; check the downloaded result. Hushdesk works the other way round: you choose the size — 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 MB or any custom value down to 100 KB — and the engine tests image settings to try to approach your target. Before you start, it predicts the result, the quality level and the image resolution. Text, fonts and vector drawings are left untouched, so they stay sharp and searchable. Everything runs in an isolated frame in this tab, and the file is never uploaded.

  • Preview compression estimates

Estimates depend on the source and settings. Review the result before submitting it to a website or sharing it.

  • Text stays vector

Only photos and scans are resampled and re-encoded. Letters, lines and charts keep their full sharpness and remain selectable.

  • Never bigger than the original

When a file is already as small as it can get, you receive it back unchanged instead of a heavier copy.

  • Private by design

Compression happens on your device, in a frame your browser cuts off from the network. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Questions and answers

How does compressing to a target size work?

We first drop what the file does not need, such as unused objects and uncompressed data, then measure every image and build a size model. Choose a target and review the size estimate. Some files cannot reach the target at a usable quality; check the downloaded result.

Will the text in my PDF get blurry?

No. Text, fonts and vector graphics are never rasterised or resampled. Only embedded photos and scans are re-encoded, so documents with little imagery stay crisp at any size.

What if my target size cannot be reached?

The estimate warns you before you start and shows the smallest reachable size, which you can pick with one click. Long scans and files made mostly of text sometimes cannot shrink further on a device; then we can offer strong compression on our server (France), only if you agree to upload.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

Not in the default mode. The engine runs in an isolated frame of this page whose network access is blocked by your browser, which you can verify in the developer tools. An upload happens only if you explicitly choose strong compression in the cloud.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

Yes. Enter the password when asked; it is checked on your device and never sent anywhere. The compressed copy is saved without the password, so protect it again if you need to.

Which files cannot be made smaller?

Images stored as JPEG 2000, JBIG2 or CMYK are kept as they are, and so are files that consist mostly of text. Such PDFs tend to be small already; for scans, the Pages as images mode can still help.
