How it works
- 01 Choose or drop your PNG files.
- 02 Leave the format on “Keep the format” for lossless optimization, or pick JPEG or WebP.
- 03 Need a size limit? Choose “To a file size”; a photo-like PNG that cannot fit is converted automatically.
- 04 Press Compress and download the result.
About this tool
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which is perfect for screenshots, diagrams and logos with transparent backgrounds, and it is also why PNG files grow large. Hushdesk first repacks the image with OxiPNG: it tries better filters and compression settings and drops text notes and timestamps, while the picture stays pixel-for-pixel identical. If a PNG actually contains a photograph, switching the output to JPEG or WebP cuts the size much further. The optimization runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.
-
Pixel-identical
Lossless mode changes how the data is packed, never the colors: the result decodes to exactly the original pixels.
-
Transparency survives
Alpha channels are kept by lossless optimization and by conversion to WebP. JPEG cannot store them, so it gets a white background.
-
Tidier files
Text chunks, EXIF blocks and timestamps inside the PNG are dropped; an embedded color profile stays.
When a PNG should become a JPEG or WebP
Keep PNG for anything with text, thin lines, flat colors or transparency: lossy formats blur those edges. A photograph saved as PNG is a different story. It can be five to ten times larger than the same picture as a good JPEG, so converting it is the single biggest saving. WebP is the best of both when the image needs transparency and a small size.
Questions and answers
Is PNG compression here really lossless?
Yes, in the default mode. OxiPNG only looks for a more efficient way to store the same pixels, so the output decodes to exactly the same image.
Why is my PNG still large after optimizing?
Photos and detailed renders compress poorly in any lossless format. Convert them to WebP, which keeps transparency, or to JPEG to make them several times lighter.
Will my transparent background survive?
It does when you keep PNG or convert to WebP. Converting to JPEG fills transparent areas with white, because JPEG has no transparency at all.
Can I reduce a PNG to a specific size in KB?
Yes. Choose “To a file size” and a target. If lossless optimization cannot reach it, the image is converted to JPEG, or to WebP when it has transparency, and a note explains what happened.
Is it safe to compress confidential screenshots here?
Yes. Screenshots of documents, chats or dashboards are optimized inside your browser and never sent over the network.
