Limits on your device depend on its memory. Larger files may still work; the tool warns you first.
How it works
- 01 Choose the PDF to shrink.
- 02 Keep the 500 KB target, or type another size in megabytes.
- 03 Check the estimate before you start.
- 04 Compress and download the file.
About this tool
Half a megabyte is a common cap on visa and consulate portals, university admission systems and older web forms built long before phones took 12-megapixel photos. This page presets a 500 KB target (500,000 bytes). Hushdesk checks your PDF first and tells you whether 500 KB is realistic: a certificate or a two-page form with a scan fits comfortably, a twenty-page colour document may not. If it cannot fit, you see the smallest reachable size and decide what to do. Everything runs on your device, and the file is never uploaded.
-
Honest about what fits
If 500 KB is out of reach, the estimate says so up front and offers the smallest size that works, instead of a blurry surprise.
-
Readable at small sizes
Photos are downsampled only as far as needed and text stays vector, so a one-page certificate still prints crisply.
-
Grayscale as an extra step
For black-and-white paperwork, the Grayscale images option drops colour data from scans and frees room for sharper pages.
Questions and answers
How do I get a scanned certificate under 500 KB?
Drop it here and keep the 500 KB target. A one- or two-page scan usually fits at a comfortable resolution. If the scan is in colour but the paper is black and white, turning on Grayscale images gives the pages extra sharpness at the same size.
The form says 512 KB. Is 500 KB safe?
Yes. 500 KB here means 500,000 bytes, which is below 512 KB however the form counts kilobytes.
Why does the estimate say 500 KB is not reachable?
The file holds more than images: fonts, form fields or pictures in formats we keep as they are (JPEG 2000, JBIG2, CMYK). The smallest size shown is what the device can do without ruining the pages; split the document, or use Pages as images for scans.
Does compressing to 500 KB remove my digital signature?
A signed PDF can be compressed, but any change breaks the signature, so the result is no longer validly signed. When you can, compress first and sign afterwards.
